Remove Candle Wax From Shag Carpeting

If a candle tipped over and wax spilled onto the shag carpeting in your living room, the following steps will instruct you on how to remove it. After the wax has been eliminated and you have brushed and vacuumed the carpeting, it will look as good as it did before the accident occurred.

  • ice pack
  • plastic scraper
  • large, paper bag
  • hand towel
  • iron
  • rubbing alcohol
  • soft-bristled scrub brush
  • damp sponge
  • carpet powder
  • vacuum with brush attachment

Freeze The Wax And Loosen It

Use a standard ice pack to freeze the wax. Place the pack directly over the wax and press it down firmly for a few minutes. If you do not have an ice pack at your home, fill a plastic bag with ice and place it over the wax. After the wax feels hard, gently loosen it from the carpet's fibers with a plastic putty knife. Wedge the tip of the knife under the wax and move the handle upwards to assist with dislodging the wax.

Melt And Absorb Any Wax Pieces That Remain

Use an iron and paper bag to melt and absorb any small pieces of wax that remain. Place a large paper bag over the wax. Lay a hand towel over the bag. Turn on an iron and adjust it to a low setting. Move the iron across the hand towel while pressing down on the bag. The wax that is underneath the bag will begin to melt. As the wax melts, it will be absorbed by the paper. After a few minutes, lift up the bag to inspect the carpeting. If all of the wax is gone, move on to the next step.

If not, continue moving the iron over the carpet until all of the wax has been eliminated. Pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol onto the treated area and rub it in with a soft-bristled scrub brush to remove any stains that were left behind by the candle wax. Wipe the cleaned area with a damp sponge to eliminate any rubbing alcohol that remains.

Freshen Up The Carpeting And Vacuum It

Sprinkle carpet powder onto the cleaned portion of the carpeting to absorb odors. After a few minutes, use the brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner to remove the powder and fluff up the carpet's fibers. The shag carpeting will look as good as it did before the wax spilled onto its surface. For more information on carpet cleaning, visit a site like
